Former US Ambassador Taranjit Singh Sandhu Named Delhi’s New L-G

Senior diplomat Taranjit Singh Sandhu has been appointed as the Lieutenant Governor of Delhi following a gubernatorial reshuffle announced by the President of India. A veteran officer of the Indian Foreign Service, Sandhu previously served as India’s Ambassador to the United States and played a significant role in strengthening India–US strategic relations. His appointment forms part of a broader set of gubernatorial changes affecting several states and Union Territories.


Career in the Indian Foreign Service

Taranjit Singh Sandhu belongs to the 1988 batch of the Indian Foreign Service and has served in various diplomatic roles for more than three decades. During his career, he held key assignments in Indian missions abroad and within the Ministry of External Affairs.

He served as India’s Ambassador to the United States from 2020 to 2024 , a period that witnessed significant expansion in strategic cooperation between the two countries. Earlier, Sandhu was India’s High Commissioner to Sri Lanka and also served as Deputy Chief of Mission at the Indian Embassy in Washington, DC . His diplomatic career focused on enhancing India’s political, economic and defence partnerships with major global partners.


Strengthening India–US Strategic Partnership

During his tenure in Washington, Sandhu contributed to the advancement of the India–US Comprehensive Global Strategic Partnership . His diplomatic engagement covered areas such as defence cooperation, emerging technologies, trade partnerships and Indo-Pacific security.

He also worked on initiatives related to supply-chain resilience, defence technology collaboration and outreach to the Indian diaspora in the United States. These efforts helped strengthen bilateral ties during a period of increasing geopolitical cooperation between the two countries.


Role as Lieutenant Governor of Delhi

Following his diplomatic career, Sandhu has now assumed the constitutional office of Lieutenant Governor of Delhi . The L-G acts as the representative of the President of India and functions as the administrative head of the National Capital Territory.

The office carries important responsibilities related to public order, land administration and coordination between the central government and the elected Delhi government .
