Tamil Nadu Launches First Dark Sky Park in Kolli Hills to Promote Astro-Tourism

Ariyur Shola Reserve Forest Hosts Tamil Nadu’s First Dark Sky Park

Tamil Nadu has inaugurated its first Dark Sky Park at the Ariyur Shola Reserve Forest in Kolli Hills of Namakkal district. The facility was launched by R S Rajakannappan and aims to promote astro-tourism and scientific awareness in the state. The initiative positions Tamil Nadu as a developing destination for night-sky observation and space-related tourism.

Location and Infrastructure

Kolli Hills was chosen for the park due to its elevated terrain, thick forest cover and very low levels of artificial lighting. Nearly a 1.5-kilometre radius around the site remains free from urban light sources, creating ideal conditions for observing celestial objects.

Developed with an investment of about ₹1 crore, the facility includes three advanced telescopes along with solar-powered systems to support sustainable operations. Visitors will be able to observe stars, planets, the moon and even the Milky Way Galaxy under clear sky conditions.

The centre will function not only as a stargazing destination at night but also as an educational hub during the day for students, researchers and visitors interested in astronomy.

Visitor Activities and Operational Plan

The park will operate mainly between 15 January and 15 June, when weather conditions offer clear skies suitable for astronomical observation. It will remain closed during the monsoon months.

Organised stargazing sessions and overnight observation camps will be conducted two to three times each month, especially during new moon phases when visibility of celestial bodies is highest. The Forest Department has partnered with Trek Tamil Nadu and the astronomy organisation Starvoirs to host such events. Visitors can stay at Agaya Gangai eco-huts, with transport arrangements facilitated by authorities.

Safety and Sustainable Tourism Measures

To ensure visitor safety, a watchtower has been built about 20 metres from the observation area and forest staff will remain on duty during night sessions. CCTV surveillance has also been installed at the park. Members of local Eco-Development Committees will assist with visitor management and operations.
