Tajikistan and Uzbekistan Propose CMS Protection for Striped Hyena

Striped Hyena May Receive Stronger Global Protection at CMS COP15

Tajikistan and Uzbekistan have jointly proposed adding the Striped Hyena to both Appendix I and Appendix II of the Convention on the Conservation of Migratory Species of Wild Animals . The proposal will be discussed at the CMS COP15 , scheduled to be held in Campo Grande from 23 to 29 March . If adopted, the decision would grant the species stronger international protection and encourage coordinated conservation measures across its broad geographic range.

Proposal for Enhanced Protection

The two Central Asian countries argue that including the striped hyena in both CMS appendices would require member states to adopt stricter conservation actions. These measures would focus on protecting habitats, strengthening wildlife management policies and reducing administrative barriers that often hinder conservation programmes. Since the species frequently moves across national borders in search of food and shelter, international cooperation is considered essential for its long-term survival.

Population Status and Conservation Concerns

According to the International Union for Conservation of Nature Red List, the striped hyena is currently classified as Near Threatened globally and Vulnerable in the Mediterranean region. Experts estimate that the global population ranges between 5,000 and 9,999 mature individuals . However, monitoring is difficult due to the species’ nocturnal habits and elusive behaviour, making accurate population assessments challenging.

Distribution and Movement Patterns

The striped hyena belongs to the Hyaenidae family, which includes four extant species: the spotted hyena, brown hyena, striped hyena and aardwolf. It occupies a wide range of habitats such as savannas, semi-deserts, grasslands, open woodlands and mountainous regions . Its distribution stretches across Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and South Asia . The species often undertakes long-distance dispersal and seasonal movements, especially in arid landscapes where food and water sources are scattered.

Exam-Focused Key Points

  • CMS: International treaty for the conservation of migratory wildlife species.

  • Appendix I: Includes endangered migratory species requiring strict protection.

  • Appendix II: Covers species needing international cooperation for conservation.

  • Striped Hyena Status: Near Threatened globally according to the IUCN Red List.

  • Estimated Population: Around 5,000–9,999 mature individuals worldwide .
