India’s flagship crafts fair returns to Faridabad
The Surajkund International Crafts Mela is in progress in Faridabad, Haryana, with its 39th edition attracting large numbers of visitors, artists and cultural enthusiasts. Widely regarded as one of India’s most prestigious craft fairs, the mela brings together traditional artisans, folk performers and culinary specialists on a single platform, celebrating the country’s living cultural heritage alongside international participation.
Theme, focus states and partner nation
This year’s edition is being held under the theme “Vocal to Global” , underscoring India’s push to take local art forms to international audiences. Uttar Pradesh and Meghalaya have been selected as the theme states, showcasing their distinctive handicrafts, folk music, dance traditions and regional cuisines. Adding a global flavour, Egypt is participating as the partner nation, presenting its traditional crafts and cultural expressions at the venue.
Boosting self-reliance among artisans
According to Parth Gupta, Managing Director of the Haryana Tourism Corporation Limited , the mela strongly reflects the idea of Atma Nirbharta for artists. By offering direct access to buyers and exposure to national and international markets, the event helps artisans generate sustainable livelihoods. Many participants come from families that have preserved craft traditions across generations, making the mela a bridge between heritage and modern markets.
A complete cultural experience for visitors
The Surajkund Mela offers a rich, immersive experience through displays of textiles, pottery, metal crafts, woodwork, jewellery and paintings. Cultural performances from nearly 20 Indian States animate the fairgrounds, while food courts serve a wide range of regional specialities prepared by expert cooks. Together, crafts, cuisine and culture create a vibrant snapshot of India’s diversity in one location.
