South Korea, U.S. Launch Ulchi Freedom Shield Amid Tensions

South Korea and the United States have already started their annual joint large-scale drill, Ulchi Freedom Guardian . The 11-day exercise brings together roughly 21,000 troops , with about 18,000 of them South Korean service members, and is aimed at improving joint responses to threats from nuclear-armed North Korea.

Purpose of the Drill

The exercise centers on computer-simulated command post training and field training focused on enhancing capabilities to respond to nuclear, missile, drone and other asymmetric threats. Both friends underline that this is a defensive exercise .

North Korea’s Reaction

North Korea has long denounced such joint military exercises, calling them preparations for an invasion and a threat to its sovereignty. The North says it will take strong action in response to any perceived provocation and has continued to develop its weapons programs despite pressure from the international community.

Political Context and Strategic Implications

It also comes against a sensitive political backdrop, with a summit meeting between South Korean president Lee Jae Myung and U.S. president Donald Trump in the offing. It also comes at a time when there are continuing talks about the presence of United States troops here, and North Korea is deepening military cooperation with Russia.

As a possible peace overture, about half of the scheduled field training was delayed by heat so intense and diplomatic considerations so sensitive that it would serve to calm rather than inflame. However, NORth Korea has refused to talk and warned of corresponding action.

The exercise showcases the military partnership between the United States and South Korea and is a deterrent signal. But it could also increase tension on the Korean Peninsula.
