India mourns the passing of Saalumarada Thimmakka , one of the country’s most admired grassroots environmentalists, whose remarkable life symbolised devotion to nature and community-led conservation. Known as the “Mother of Karnataka’s Trees” , she leaves behind a legacy deeply rooted in afforestation, ecological care and public awareness.
A Life Dedicated to Trees and Conservation
Born in 1911 in Hulikal , Ramanagara district, Thimmakka had no formal education and worked as a daily labourer. Yet her passion for the environment transformed barren stretches into thriving green corridors. Along with her husband, she planted 385 banyan trees across a 4.5 km stretch between Hulikal and Kudur, tending to each sapling with dedication comparable to nurturing children. This earned her the title “Saalumarada” , meaning row of trees in Kannada.
National Recognition and Honours
Her conservation efforts gained recognition across India. She was awarded the Padma Shri in 2019 , one of the nation’s highest civilian honours. She also received the Nadoja Award (2010) from Hampi University, the Indira Priyadarshini Vrikshamitra Award (1997) , and the National Citizen Award (1995) . These accolades highlighted her influence in promoting large-scale plantation drives and encouraging citizens to embrace green causes.
Passing of a Legend
The 114-year-old environmentalist passed away in a private Bengaluru hospital after prolonged illness. Leaders, environmental activists and citizens shared heartfelt tributes, recalling her humility, strength and unparalleled service to nature. Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah honoured her memory, describing her as an embodiment of environmental love and an inspiration for generations to come.
An Enduring Legacy
Thimmakka’s life remains a powerful reminder of how individual action can shape environmental futures. Her work continues to inspire afforestation campaigns, community-led green initiatives and ecological responsibility across India.
