Roopkund Lake Mystery: Hundreds of Skeletons Found in Himalayan Glacial Lake

High in the Himalayan region of Uttarakhand lies Roopkund Lake , one of India’s most mysterious natural sites. Located at an altitude of around 5,020 metres , the small glacial lake is surrounded by rugged mountain terrain and snow-covered peaks. Discovery of the Skeletons

The skeletal remains were widely reported in 1942 by forest ranger Hari Kishan Madhwal during a patrol near Nanda Devi National Park . Initially, British authorities suspected that the remains might belong to Japanese soldiers who had died during World War II .

Further investigation later revealed that the bones were far older. Alongside the skeletons, researchers discovered items such as wooden artefacts, leather footwear, iron spearheads and ornaments , preserved due to the cold alpine conditions.

Scientific Research and Findings

Scientific studies conducted over several decades have provided important insights. Early research by the Anthropological Survey of India found that many skulls showed severe head injuries , possibly caused by heavy objects falling from above.

Later studies using radiocarbon dating and DNA analysis revealed that the remains belong to more than 300 individuals who died during multiple events across different historical periods , rather than a single incident.

Cultural Significance and Tourism

The region around Roopkund also holds cultural importance. The famous Nanda Devi Raj Jat , held once every twelve years, passes through nearby Himalayan routes and honours Goddess Nanda Devi .

The lake is also a popular trekking destination, with routes usually beginning from Lohajung and passing through scenic alpine meadows such as Wan village and Bedni Bugyal . In recent years, authorities have emphasised conservation efforts to protect the skeletal remains and preserve this unique archaeological and natural site.
