Riyadh Metro Enters Guinness Records as World’s Longest Driverless Network
Saudi Arabia has achieved a new global milestone with the Riyadh Metro officially recognised as the longest fully driverless metro network in the world . Stretching across 176 kilometres , the network operates on six interconnected routes and forms a cornerstone of Riyadh’s futuristic public transit vision under the Kingdom’s transformation agenda.
Guinness Certification Highlights Global Achievement
The Guinness World Records endorsement followed operational clearance of the entire network, confirming its position as the world leader in automated metro systems. This recognition places Riyadh alongside the most advanced urban transport cities globally and underscores Saudi Arabia’s sustained investment in large-scale infrastructure.
Six Fully Automated Lines with Centralised Control
Designed under Grade of Automation 4 (GoA4) standards, the metro runs without drivers, relying entirely on advanced signalling, AI-driven control centres and real-time monitoring systems. From train speed regulation to safety oversight, operations are managed through central command facilities, ensuring punctual service across all six lines and 85 smart stations .
Infrastructure Powered by Global Engineering Groups
Riyadh Metro integrates elevated, underground and ground-level tracks to deliver seamless urban connectivity. The rolling stock—built by Siemens, Alstom and Bombardier —consists of nearly 190 energy-efficient trains equipped with modern interiors, air-conditioned cabins, surveillance systems and adaptive passenger information displays.
