Rare Dusky Eagle Owl Pair Spotted Near Corbett Tiger Reserve After 14 Years

Dusky Eagle Owl Rediscovered in Uttarakhand’s Terai Forests, Boosting Conservation Hopes

A rare pair of Dusky Eagle-Owl has been spotted in the Phato tourism zone of the Terai West Forest Division near Jim Corbett National Park in Uttarakhand . The sighting has generated excitement among conservationists and birdwatchers because the species had not been officially recorded in the region since 2010 . The discovery highlights the ecological richness of the Terai landscape and indicates improving habitat conditions around the reserve.

Rare Sighting Documented by Naturalist

The owl pair was photographed and documented by wildlife naturalist Himanshu Tiruva . His images quickly circulated among ornithologists and birding communities, confirming the presence of the elusive species in the region.

Dusky eagle owls are known for their exceptional camouflage and secretive behaviour. They generally remain hidden in dense forest canopies during the day, which makes confirmed sightings extremely uncommon. Observing a pair after more than a decade is therefore considered a notable record for Uttarakhand’s avifauna.

Indicator of a Healthy Ecosystem

Wildlife experts consider large raptors such as the dusky eagle owl important indicators of ecological stability. Predatory birds require an abundant prey base and undisturbed nesting areas to survive.

Their presence suggests that the forests surrounding Corbett still support a healthy population of small mammals, reptiles and birds that form the owl’s diet. The sighting therefore reflects the continuing ecological resilience of the Terai forest ecosystem.

Role of Conservation Efforts

Forest officials credit the sighting to ongoing conservation measures in the Terai West Forest Division. Improved habitat protection, reduced human disturbance and the preservation of natural wildlife corridors have helped maintain the mature forests preferred by the species.

The discovery of a possible breeding pair has further strengthened confidence in the conservation strategies implemented around the Corbett landscape.

Important Facts for Exams

  • The Dusky Eagle-Owl (Bubo coromandus) is a large owl measuring about 48–58 cm in length.

  • It prefers dense forests with tall trees , especially near rivers and wetlands .

  • The Terai region along the Himalayan foothills is known for rich biodiversity and wildlife corridors .

  • Jim Corbett National Park , established in 1936 , is India’s oldest national park .

Boost to Birdwatching Tourism

The Phato tourism zone is already known for wildlife sightings such as tigers and elephants. The rediscovery of the dusky eagle owl may now attract ornithologists, photographers and nature enthusiasts interested in rare bird species.

Researchers are planning further monitoring to study the owl’s behaviour, habitat preferences and breeding activity. Such studies could provide valuable insights into raptor ecology while strengthening conservation awareness in the Terai landscape.
