India Launches ‘Defence Forces Vision 2047’ Roadmap for Modern Integrated Armed Forces
Rajnath Singh released the strategic document “Defence Forces Vision 2047: A Roadmap for a Future-Ready Indian Military” at an event held in South Block, New Delhi on March 10, 2026 . The long-term roadmap outlines a comprehensive plan to modernise and transform the Indian Armed Forces into a technologically advanced, integrated and agile force by 2047 , marking the centenary of India’s independence.
The vision document was prepared by the Headquarters Integrated Defence Staff under the Ministry of Defence. It provides a strategic framework for strengthening military capabilities in alignment with the national objective of achieving Viksit Bharat by 2047 .
Key Strategic Objectives
The roadmap outlines structural reforms and capability enhancements needed to address evolving geopolitical and technological challenges. It proposes transforming India’s military into a multi-domain, integrated force capable of responding effectively across land, sea, air, cyber and space domains.
The document also highlights the importance of maintaining strong deterrence against potential adversaries while ensuring readiness to handle conventional as well as emerging forms of warfare.
Emphasis on Jointness Among Services
A major pillar of the vision is enhanced joint operations and coordination among the Indian Army, Indian Navy and Indian Air Force. The roadmap stresses greater integration in planning, operational execution and capability development to achieve seamless tri-service functioning.
Improved jointness is expected to enhance operational efficiency and optimise the use of military resources in complex conflict scenarios.
Technology and Indigenous Capability Development
The document also emphasises the adoption of advanced technologies , including artificial intelligence, cyber systems, autonomous platforms and next-generation defence equipment. Another important objective is strengthening self-reliance in defence production by encouraging indigenous innovation and domestic defence manufacturing.
Such initiatives align with India’s broader goal of building a robust indigenous defence ecosystem capable of meeting national security requirements.
Phased Implementation Strategy
The roadmap proposes a phased approach to achieving these goals, outlining capability targets across short-term, medium-term and long-term timelines . Officials indicated that this structured plan will guide military modernisation, institutional reforms and strategic partnerships needed to build a globally competitive defence force.
The vision also advocates a whole-of-nation approach , integrating military capability with diplomatic, economic and technological strengths to safeguard India’s national interests in an increasingly complex global security environment.
