IndiGo Co-Founder Rahul Bhatia Takes Over as Interim Chief Executive Officer
Rahul Bhatia, billionaire businessman and co-founder of IndiGo, has assumed the role of interim Chief Executive Officer of the airline following the resignation of Pieter Elbers. The leadership change comes at a time when the airline is addressing operational and strategic challenges in India’s rapidly expanding aviation sector. Bhatia will oversee the company’s management during the transition period while the airline searches for a permanent CEO.
Early Life and Education
Rahul Bhatia was born in Nainital, Uttarakhand , and pursued higher education in Canada. He graduated from the University of Waterloo with a Bachelor’s degree in Electrical Engineering .
After completing his studies, Bhatia returned to India in 1984 with plans to establish a telecommunications venture. However, regulatory limitations at the time prevented the project from materialising, leading him to explore opportunities in the travel and aviation sectors.
Building InterGlobe and Launching IndiGo
Bhatia joined his father’s travel business in Delhi and gradually expanded it into the diversified group InterGlobe Enterprises. The company developed operations across travel management, hospitality and aviation services .
In 2004 , Bhatia established InterGlobe Aviation Limited and secured an airline licence. Two years later, in 2006 , he co-founded IndiGo with aviation entrepreneur Rakesh Gangwal. The airline adopted a low-cost carrier model , focusing on efficient operations, quick aircraft turnaround and fleet standardisation, enabling rapid expansion in India’s domestic aviation market.
Growth of IndiGo
Under Bhatia’s strategic leadership, IndiGo quickly emerged as a dominant airline in India. By 2010 , the carrier had captured nearly 20% of the domestic aviation market . Over time, differences arose between Bhatia and Gangwal regarding corporate governance and management structure, eventually leading to Gangwal stepping down from the board and reducing his shareholding.
Despite these developments, IndiGo continues to hold its position as India’s largest airline by passenger traffic and market share .
Business Influence and Net Worth
Rahul Bhatia remains a key figure shaping the airline’s long-term strategy through his leadership in InterGlobe Enterprises and InterGlobe Aviation. According to Forbes, his net worth is estimated at around 6.5 billion US dollars as of March 2026 , making him one of India’s prominent entrepreneurs in the aviation sector.
