President Murmu’s Visit to Manipur Triggers Mixed Responses and Heightened Security Measures
President Droupadi Murmu’s two-day visit to Manipur, beginning 12 December , has drawn sharply contrasting reactions from different communities in the state, prompting authorities to significantly strengthen security in Imphal and surrounding regions. Her visit comes at a critical time, as Manipur continues to grapple with prolonged ethnic tensions, displacement and humanitarian distress.
Security Tightened as Shutdown Is Declared
Personnel have been deployed in large numbers along key routes, including the stretch from Imphal airport to the Nupi Lal Memorial Complex , where the President will honour the contributions of women freedom fighters. Meanwhile, the militant coalition CorCom has announced a state-wide shutdown during the visit, describing it as an attempt to assert central control over Manipur.
CorCom’s Criticism and Shutdown Appeal
CorCom, comprising six banned insurgent groups , condemned ongoing security operations and accused the government of using the Nupi Lal Day commemoration to legitimise Indian authority. The coalition urged the public to observe a total shutdown from 11–12 December .
Kuki Zo Council’s Welcome and Humanitarian Appeal
In contrast, the Kuki Zo Council welcomed the President, acknowledging her sensitivity toward tribal struggles. The council urged her to extend her visit to Kuki Zo–inhabited regions, meet displaced families and take note of the persistent humanitarian challenges affecting tribal victims of violence.
Hopes Linked to the Visit
For many residents, the President’s presence offers an opportunity to highlight long-standing grievances of both valley and hill communities. It is hoped that her visit will catalyse greater national attention toward peace-building, justice and rehabilitation for displaced populations.
