Poland Moves to Secure Its Eastern Airspace

Poland has unveiled plans to construct a $2.2 billion multi-layered anti-drone defence system along its eastern frontier, underscoring heightened security concerns linked to Russia’s ongoing military actions in the region. The project reflects Warsaw’s determination to counter emerging aerial threats and protect its airspace amid the prolonged Russia–Ukraine war .

Drone Incursions as a Strategic Trigger

The announcement follows a series of incidents involving suspected Russian drones breaching Polish airspace. Earlier this year, multiple unmanned aerial vehicles were detected entering Poland, prompting NATO fighter jets to scramble. In at least one instance, falling debris caused damage on the ground. Polish officials believe such intrusions are not accidental but part of hybrid warfare tactics designed to probe defences and test NATO’s response thresholds without escalating into open conflict.

A Phased, Multi-Layered Defence Architecture

Deputy Defence Minister Cezary Tomczyk clarified that the system will not take the form of a single physical barrier. Instead, it will integrate electronic warfare capabilities , including drone-jamming and signal-disruption technologies, with kinetic defences such as machine guns, cannons, and missile systems. Initial operational capability is expected within six months , while full deployment is planned over two years .

Strategic Restraint with High Readiness

Officials noted that some components of the system would be activated only in wartime or extreme threat scenarios . Tomczyk stated that Ukraine’s continued resistance reduces the likelihood of a direct conventional war in Europe, but warned that sabotage, UAV incursions and provocations remain persistent risks.

Funding and Broader Defence Strategy

Most of the funding will come from European Union defence mechanisms , including the SAFE loan programme, supplemented by Poland’s defence budget.
