GTI 2026: Pakistan Ranked Most Terrorism-Affected, India at 13th
Pakistan has been ranked the most terrorism-affected country in the Global Terrorism Index 2026, released by the Institute for Economics and Peace. The report records a sharp rise in militant violence, with 1,139 deaths and 1,045 incidents in 2025—the highest since 2013.
Drivers Behind the Surge
The escalation in violence is linked to increased activity by groups such as Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan and Balochistan Liberation Army. Regional instability, cross-border tensions, and internal militant networks have significantly contributed to the deteriorating security situation.
Global Distribution of Terrorism
While Pakistan ranks first, sub-Saharan Africa remains the epicentre of terrorism globally. Countries like Burkina Faso, Niger, Nigeria, Mali, and Somalia continue to report high levels of violence. Other affected nations include Syria, Israel, and the Democratic Republic of the Congo. Despite regional spikes, global terrorism deaths declined by 28% to 5,582 in 2025.
India’s Position and Regional Context
India is ranked 13th with a score of 6.43, reporting over 140 incidents and more than 100 fatalities in 2025. Afghanistan remains just outside the top ten, while Myanmar follows India. Countries like Iran and the United States rank lower, reflecting diverse regional patterns.
Emerging Global Threats and Trends
The report identifies Islamic State (IS) and its affiliates as the deadliest network, responsible for about 17% of global attacks. Other major groups include JNIM, TTP, and al-Shabaab. The report also highlights concerns such as youth radicalisation, lone-wolf attacks in Western countries, and rising tensions in West Asia.
