Padma Bhushan 2026: Jharkhand Movement Leader Shibu Soren Honoured, Bharat Ratna Demand Grows

Shibu Soren Conferred Padma Bhushan for Public Affairs

Veteran tribal leader and Jharkhand Mukti Morcha (JMM) founder Shibu Soren has been posthumously awarded the Padma Bhushan in the field of public affairs. The honour, announced by the Union Ministry of Home Affairs on the eve of the 77th Republic Day, recognises his pivotal role in championing tribal rights and leading the prolonged struggle for the creation of Jharkhand as a separate state . The announcement has also reignited political demands for conferring the Bharat Ratna on him.

Early Life and Roots of Activism

Born on January 11, 1944 , in Nemra village of Ramgarh district , Shibu Soren’s political journey was shaped by personal loss and social injustice. His father was killed by moneylenders when Soren was only 13 years old, exposing him early to exploitation under the mahajani system . This tragedy became the catalyst for his lifelong fight for land rights, dignity, and justice for tribal communities. Over time, he emerged as a mass leader, revered as ‘Dishom Guru’ , meaning leader of the land .

Architect of the Jharkhand Statehood Movement

Shibu Soren was one of the most prominent faces of the Jharkhand movement , mobilising tribal communities across decades to demand a separate state carved out of Bihar. His grassroots leadership and political persistence culminated in the formation of Jharkhand in 2000 . Following statehood, Soren served as Chief Minister of Jharkhand three times and represented the Dumka Lok Sabha constituency eight times , blending mass movements with parliamentary politics.

Political Responses to the Honour

The Padma Bhushan was welcomed by the Jharkhand Mukti Morcha , which described it as overdue recognition of Soren’s historic contribution. However, JMM leaders criticised the Centre for not awarding him the Bharat Ratna , arguing that his role in tribal empowerment and state formation merited the highest civilian honour. The Congress echoed similar sentiments. The Bharatiya Janata Party , meanwhile, hailed the Padma Bhushan as a tribute to Jharkhand’s soil, people, and democratic struggle.
