PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana: A Solar Revolution for Indian Homes

Overview

The PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana is a government scheme launched in 2024 to provide free electricity to households with rooftop solar panels. It offers subsidies up to ₹78,000, covering 40 lakh homes already, and aims to reach 1 crore households by 2027.

A New Dawn for Indian Households

Imagine getting up to 300 units of free electricity every month. No more worrying about rising bills. No more dependence on costly power from the grid. This is the promise of the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana, a groundbreaking initiative launched by Prime Minister Narendra Modi on 15 February 2024. The scheme is India’s largest domestic rooftop solar programme. It aims to install rooftop solar systems in one crore homes by the end of 2026-27. As of 29 May 2026, over 40 lakh families have already switched to solar.

What is the PM Surya Ghar Muft Bijli Yojana?

PM Surya Ghar: Muft Bijli Yojana translates to "PM's Solar Home Free Electricity Scheme." It is a central government initiative that enables residential households to install grid-connected rooftop solar systems. The scheme provides a direct subsidy to reduce the installation cost. It also offers up to 300 units of free electricity per month through solar power generation. Any residential consumer in India with a grid electricity connection can apply on the scheme’s National Portal.

How Much Subsidy Can You Get?

The subsidy is the heart of the scheme. The Central Financial Assistance (CFA) is calculated based on the capacity of the rooftop solar system.

  • For the first 2 kW: 60% subsidy of the system cost

  • For the additional 1 kW (from 2 to 3 kW): 40% subsidy

  • Maximum subsidy for a 3 kW system: ₹78,000  (For households consuming 150-300 units monthly)

For lower consumption (0–150 units), a 1–2 kW system is recommended, with subsidies ranging from ₹30,000 to ₹60,000. The subsidy is transferred directly to the beneficiary's bank account within 15 days after verification.

To be eligible, an applicant must:
