Guwahati, February 2026: Prime Minister Narendra Modi addressed a grand gathering at the Sarusajai Stadium in Guwahati for ‘Bagurumba Dwhou 2026’, a landmark cultural festival celebrating the rich heritage of the Bodo community. Describing the event as a vibrant expression of Assam’s cultural identity, the Prime Minister reaffirmed his government’s commitment to elevating the state’s art and traditions onto national and global platforms.

Highlighting his deep connect with the Northeast, PM Modi noted that no Prime Minister has visited Assam as frequently as he has. He pointed to sustained efforts to promote the region’s culture, including grand celebrations of Bihu, Jhumoir Binondini, and the Bodo Mahotsav in New Delhi. PM Modi acknowledged their pivotal role in social reform, cultural renaissance, and political awakening, asserting that India’s historical narrative remains incomplete without acknowledging Assam’s past and its people's contributions.

The Prime Minister outlined key achievements in preserving and promoting Assam’s cultural identity. These include the national recognition for Bihu , the inclusion of Charaideo Moidam in UNESCO’s World Heritage list , the grant of classical language status to Assamese , and the recognition of Bodo as an associate official language of Assam . He emphasized the respect accorded to Bathou Dharma, with Bathou Puja declared a state holiday, and recalled the installation of statues of Ahom general Lachit Borphukan and Bodofa Upendra Nath Brahma.

PM Modi underscored the transformative impact of the historic 2020 Bodo Peace Accord , which he said restored trust, ended decades of conflict, and brought thousands of youths into the mainstream. He detailed development initiatives in the Bodoland Territorial Region, citing a special package of ₹1,500 crore , new medical colleges in Kokrajhar and Tamulpur, nursing institutes, and enhanced road and rail connectivity under the Act East Policy.
