A Historic Honour for PM Modi
Prime Minister Narendra Modi visited Norway on 18th May. During this visit, Norway gave him its highest civilian award. The award is called the Grand Cross of the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit. This honour is not given to everyone. It is for people who have done great work for Norway's interests and for world peace.
32nd International Award for an Indian Leader
This award is very special. It is PM Modi's 32nd international honour from different countries. Very few leaders in the world have received so many awards. It shows that India is now a very important country in global matters like trade, security, and diplomacy.
First Visit by an Indian PM in 43 Years
PM Modi's trip to Norway was historic for another reason. He became the first Indian Prime Minister to visit Norway in 43 years. The last Indian PM to visit Norway was Indira Gandhi. This visit helped both countries become better friends and partners.
What is the Royal Norwegian Order of Merit?
King Olav V started this order in 1985. It is mainly given to foreign citizens. These people must have done something very good for Norway. The award recognises work in diplomacy, public service, and international cooperation. It is one of Norway's most respected honours.
Understanding the Grand Cross Level
The Grand Cross is not a simple award. It is the highest level of this order. The order has five levels:
-
Grand Cross (highest)
-
Commander with Star
-
Commander
-
Knight First Class
-
Knight (lowest)
The Grand Cross is worn as a sash over the right shoulder. It is given only in very special cases. The recipient can keep the award medal forever.
King Harald V and the Award System
King Harald V is the current King of Norway. He is also the Grand Master of this order. He gives the award based on advice from Norway's foreign ministry and royal experts. This makes the award very official and prestigious.
Back to Back European Honours for Modi
Just one day before Norway's award, Sweden also honoured PM Modi. Sweden gave him the Royal Order of the Polar Star, Degree Commander Grand Cross. That is Sweden's highest award for foreign leaders. Receiving two top European honours in two days is a very big achievement.
