PM Modi Launches ₹23,550 Crore Infrastructure Projects in Silchar

Shillong–Silchar Corridor to Boost Connectivity and Trade in Northeast

Prime Minister Narendra Modi inaugurated and laid the foundation for infrastructure projects worth ₹23,550 crore in Silchar , aimed at improving connectivity and transforming the Barak Valley into an important trade and logistics hub in Northeast India. Speaking at a public event in Ramnagar , the Prime Minister highlighted that stronger transport networks would enhance the region’s integration with domestic and neighbouring markets, particularly Bangladesh , Myanmar , and other regional economies.


Shillong–Silchar High-Speed Corridor

The largest project announced was the Shillong–Silchar High-Speed Corridor , with an estimated cost of ₹22,864 crore . The 166.8-kilometre greenfield, access-controlled expressway will form part of National Highway 06 and will be implemented by the National Highways and Infrastructure Development Corporation Limited .

The corridor will pass through the districts of Ri-Bhoi District , East Khasi Hills District , and West Jaintia Hills District before entering Cachar District . Extensive tunnels will be constructed through the hilly terrain, and the project is expected to be completed by 2030 . Once operational, travel time between Guwahati and Silchar is projected to decrease from about nine hours to nearly five hours .


Urban Infrastructure and Education Projects

The Prime Minister also performed the bhoomi poojan for the Silchar Town Flyover , a project costing ₹565 crore . The first phase of the flyover will extend from Capital Point on Trunk Road to Rangirkhari Point , aiming to reduce congestion along one of the city’s busiest routes.

Additionally, the foundation stone was laid for a College of Agriculture at Patharkandi . The ₹122-crore institution will be built across 88 hectares and will focus on agricultural education, research and skill development for students from the Barak Valley and surrounding areas.


Boost to Trade and the Act East Policy

Improved infrastructure is expected to enhance trade, tourism and agricultural development across the northeast. The Prime Minister noted that better connectivity would create new economic opportunities and generate employment for local communities.

These initiatives also support India’s Act East Policy , which emphasises improved connectivity between Northeast India and neighbouring countries.
