PGIMER Breakthrough: New Affordable Treatment for Celphos Poisoning

PGIMER Doctors Report Global Breakthrough in Celphos Poisoning Treatment

Doctors at Postgraduate Institute of Medical Education and Research (PGIMER) have reported a major global breakthrough in the management of aluminium phosphide poisoning, commonly known as Celphos. The innovation introduces an effective, affordable, and scalable treatment option for one of the deadliest forms of pesticide poisoning, which remains a serious public health challenge in India’s agrarian regions.

First-of-Its-Kind Clinical Evidence

The study, conducted by the Department of Internal Medicine at PGIMER, is the first clinical research worldwide to establish the therapeutic benefit of intravenous lipid emulsion (ILE) therapy in aluminium phosphide poisoning. The findings were published in the peer-reviewed journal European Review of Medical and Pharmacological Sciences , placing the research on the global scientific map. The work was carried out under the leadership of Dr Sanjay Jain, Dean (Academics) and Head of Internal Medicine at PGIMER.

Marked Improvement in Survival and Recovery

Results from the randomised clinical trial showed that patients treated with intravenous lipid emulsion alongside standard supportive care had significantly lower mortality rates . Clinicians also observed quicker correction of metabolic acidosis, improved blood pressure stability, and better cardiac recovery, even among critically ill patients presenting with shock. Importantly, early administration of the therapy was found to dramatically change the otherwise fatal trajectory of Celphos poisoning.

Practical and Low-Cost Solution for Peripheral Hospitals

One of the most significant advantages of lipid emulsion therapy is its accessibility. The formulation is inexpensive, readily available, and already used in hospitals for other indications. This makes it especially valuable for district and rural healthcare facilities , where aluminium phosphide poisoning cases are common but access to advanced intensive care is often limited.

Important Facts for Exams

  • Aluminium phosphide is commonly known as Celphos.

  • It is widely used as a grain preservative in agriculture.

  • Intravenous lipid emulsion therapy has been shown to reduce mortality.

  • Celphos poisoning has high incidence in states like Punjab, Haryana, and Uttar Pradesh.

Public Health Impact and Research Significance

Aluminium phosphide poisoning continues to cause high fatality due to the absence of a specific antidote and rapid cardiovascular collapse. The PGIMER-led research, supported by the institute’s Medical Education and Research Cell, highlights the importance of context-specific clinical innovation . By identifying a treatment that is both effective and feasible at scale, the study has the potential to save thousands of lives and significantly strengthen emergency poisoning care across India and other affected countries.
