P. V. Sindhu Given Voting Rights in BWF Council, Boosts Athlete Voice

A Giant Leap off the Court

P. V. Sindhu has stepped up to a key leadership role in world badminton as Chair of the Athletes’ Commission and a voting member of the Badminton World Federation (BWF) Council.

This represents a critical point at which one of the world's elite athletes is playing a role in setting the directions of the sport.

Entry into the BWF Council

Sindhu became a member of the BWF Council following the vetting process in late 2025. She attended her first meeting in her capacity at the BWF Annual General Meeting in Horsens.

As a member, she will now have an influential say in the decision-making process, representing the players at the pinnacle of badminton governance.

Role and Responsibilities

The BWF Council is the highest governing body for badminton. As part of her two roles, Sindhu will:

  • Make policy and strategy decisions
  • Advocate for the global players' interests and concerns
  • Advocate for development in the sport

She will bring the voice of players to the table

Why This Appointment is Significant

Sindhu's inclusion is significant because playing players are seldom given voting rights in international sports organisations. Her inclusion helps:

  • Bring an athlete voice to decision-making
  • Enhance transparency and player-focused decision-making
  • Increase athlete representation in world sports

It also paves the way for more active player leadership in various sports.

Support from BWF Leadership

BWF President Khunying Patama Leeswadtrakul welcomed Sindhu to the Council and praised the value of having the voices of players in leadership.

She stressed that athletes are the heart of the game and their knowledge and understanding are critical to its future. Sindhu's talent, experience and skills will bring a new dimension to the Council.

A New Era of Athlete Governance

Sindhu's appointment is part of a growing trend in international sports administration, with more athletes being given a voice. She will have a direct say in policies affecting athletes, from event scheduling to welfare programs.

This announcement not only boosts India's representation in world sports governance but also reinforces the global trend towards athlete-led governance.
