India Launches Operation Urja Suraksha to Protect Oil and Gas Shipments
The Indian Navy has launched Operation Urja Suraksha to ensure the safe movement of India-bound energy cargo through the Strait of Hormuz amid rising tensions in West Asia. The mission focuses on safeguarding critical imports such as LNG, LPG and crude oil.
Strategic Importance of the Operation
The Strait of Hormuz is a vital global energy corridor through which a large share of the world’s oil supply passes. Any disruption in this region can directly affect India’s energy availability and economic stability. The operation reflects a proactive strategy to maintain uninterrupted energy flows and reduce vulnerability to geopolitical risks.
Deployment and Escort Measures
As part of the operation, 22 vessels have been prioritised for secure transit, including 20 high-value energy carriers. The Indian Navy has deployed multiple frontline assets, including destroyers and frigates, to escort these ships. Early operations ensured the safe passage of LPG carriers Pine Gas and Jag Vasant, along with other vessels such as Shivalik, Nanda Devi and Jag Laadki, demonstrating operational efficiency.
Risk Management and Navigation Support
Given the threat of underwater mines and volatile security conditions, the Navy is using advanced hydrographic mapping to identify safe maritime routes. Real-time navigation assistance and route guidance are being provided to ship crews. Escort operations extend beyond narrow passages to ensure multi-layered maritime security throughout the journey.
Inter-Ministerial Coordination and Preparedness
The operation highlights coordinated efforts between the Ministry of Defence and the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh has reviewed preparedness measures. India is also sharing navigational support with friendly countries, strengthening regional cooperation and maritime safety.
