OmanSat-1 Liftoff Marks New Era in Oman’s Space and Digital Strategy

OmanSat-1: Oman’s First National Communications Satellite Launched

Oman has entered a new chapter in its technological transformation with the successful launch of OmanSat-1 , the country’s first national communications satellite. The mission is a major step toward enhancing digital sovereignty, strengthening national security infrastructure, and advancing the goals of Oman Vision 2040 , which emphasises innovation, connectivity and economic diversification.

Partnership with Airbus for Advanced Satellite Capabilities

OmanSat-1 was developed through a landmark partnership between the Ministry of Transport, Communications and Information Technology and Airbus Defence and Space . The satellite is built on Airbus’ OneSat platform , known for its reconfigurability in orbit. This allows Oman to adjust capacity, coverage, and operational parameters in real time, ensuring long-term adaptability. Operating in the Ka-band , the satellite will cover Oman’s landmass, maritime zones, and key regions across the Middle East, East Africa and parts of Asia, significantly enhancing secure communication networks.

National Operations Led by Space Communications Technologies

The programme will be managed by Space Communications Technologies (SCT) , a subsidiary of the Oman Investment Authority. SCT will oversee mission execution, ground infrastructure development and the satellite’s integration into national communication frameworks. A dedicated Project Management and Follow-up Office has been set up to supervise technical coordination and ensure smooth delivery of services across government and private sectors.

Building Expertise and Strengthening Digital Independence

Beyond expanding connectivity, the mission focuses on developing Oman’s human capital. Training programmes, university collaborations and SME participation aim to cultivate local expertise in satellite engineering, ground systems, cybersecurity and space applications. With OmanSat-1, the nation reduces dependence on foreign networks and strengthens secure communication for remote regions, emergency services and digital governance.
