CSIR Launches Technology-Driven Smart Village Project in Kendrapada
Kusunpur village in Odisha ’s Kendrapada district is set to become the state’s first “smart village” under a technology-led rural development initiative by the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research . Located in the Rajnagar block, the village has around 130 families and a population of nearly 700. The project aims to create a self-reliant and sustainable rural ecosystem by integrating scientific innovations into everyday life.
Mission-Mode Initiative by CSIR
The smart village project has been launched under the Ministry of Science and Technology through the Council of Scientific and Industrial Research . It aligns with the national vision of Viksit Bharat@2047 , which focuses on transforming India into a developed nation by 2047.
The initiative adopts a mission-mode approach, combining scientific expertise with local governance to improve infrastructure, livelihoods and resilience in rural areas.
Technology Integration for Sustainable Living
The project will introduce several indigenous technologies to improve living conditions and agricultural efficiency. These include scientific paddy storage systems to reduce post-harvest losses, along with renewable energy solutions and clean cooking technologies.
Safe drinking water systems will also be deployed to enhance public health and quality of life. The integration of such technologies aims to promote sustainable resource use and reduce dependence on traditional, less efficient practices.
Infrastructure and Disaster Resilience
Multiple CSIR laboratories will contribute to infrastructure development. The CSIR-Central Building Research Institute will focus on climate-resilient infrastructure, including schools, anganwadi centres and sanitation facilities.
Given the vulnerability of Kendrapada district to cyclones, the project also includes the construction of multipurpose cyclone shelters and improved village planning to enhance disaster preparedness.
Skill Development and Rural Livelihoods
The initiative places strong emphasis on skill development and entrepreneurship. The CSIR-Central Leather Research Institute will provide training in leather product manufacturing, including innovative materials derived from fish and poultry waste.
Training in traditional textile production will also be promoted to support local crafts and generate income opportunities. These efforts aim to create a balanced model of technological advancement and economic empowerment.
