National Maritime Day 2026

National Maritime Day and Its Importance.

Every year, on April 5, India celebrates the National Maritime Day in memory of its maritime culture and the significance of the shipping industry. The day celebrates seafarers, the port authority and other maritime institutions that enable world trade and global connectivity and also the future potential of the industry.

The SS Loyalty Cruise.

This day owes its genesis to the historic voyage of SS Loyalty which left Mumbai on April 5, 1919 bound to London. This voyage was the first India-London voyage operated by the Scindia Steam Navigation Company and was symbolic of economic self-reliance since it was the first India-London shipping voyage of the colonial era.

Role of Maritime Sector in Economy

The maritime industry is critical to the economic growth of India because over 90 percent of the national trade by volume is carried through sea directions. Ports and shipping networks facilitate effective transportation of goods across the continents and are therefore vital to global trade and supply chains.

Awareness and Theme-Based Celebrations.

National Maritime Day is celebrated by conducting seminars, events, and awareness programs on the aspects of maritime safety, sustainability, and technological advancement. Companies like the Directorate General of Shipping foster the shipping and logistics careers and foster innovation in the shipping and logistics.
