NITI Aayog–UNICEF Partnership to Strengthen Maternal and Child Nutrition in Aspirational Districts
India’s policy think tank NITI Aayog has signed a Statement of Intent (SOI) with UNICEF India to enhance health and nutrition outcomes in aspirational districts and blocks across the country. The collaboration aims to improve maternal and child nutrition in underserved regions by combining the institutional expertise and operational capabilities of both organisations. The initiative reflects the government’s continued focus on reducing regional development gaps through data-driven and collaborative strategies.
Focus on Aspirational Districts and Blocks
The agreement was signed by Rohit Kumar , Additional Secretary and Mission Director of the Aspirational Districts and Blocks Programme at NITI Aayog, and Arjan de Wagt . The partnership will support targeted interventions designed to improve healthcare delivery and nutrition services at the grassroots level. Special emphasis will be placed on districts and blocks where development indicators—particularly those related to maternal and child health—remain below national averages.
Strengthening Implementation and Governance
The initiative aims to enhance programme implementation by encouraging collaboration among government agencies, development partners and private stakeholders. Officials from NITI Aayog highlighted the importance of convergence between different institutions to accelerate improvements in nutrition indicators. The partnership will also strengthen monitoring frameworks and promote evidence-based policy implementation using real-time data and analytics.
UNICEF’s Role and CSR Participation
Under the agreement, UNICEF India will provide technical support through its IMPAct4Nutrition (I4N) platform. This initiative mobilises businesses, public sector organisations and industry groups to support nutrition-focused projects through Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) funding. These collaborations are expected to strengthen local health systems, expand community-based programmes and encourage private sector involvement in social development.
