Nitish Kumar and NDA Candidates Win Bihar Rajya Sabha Polls
The National Democratic Alliance secured a complete victory in the Rajya Sabha elections from Bihar , winning all five seats that were up for contest. Key winners include Nitish Kumar , Nitin Nabin , Ram Nath Thakur , Upendra Kushwaha , and Shivesh Kumar . The outcome reflects the NDA’s strong legislative position in the state assembly.
Vote Counting and Results
The results were declared by the returning officer after vote counting. Nitish Kumar and Nitin Nabin secured 44 votes each , while Ram Nath Thakur and Upendra Kushwaha received 42 votes each .
Shivesh Kumar initially obtained 30 first-preference votes but crossed the winning threshold after redistribution of second-preference votes under the single transferable vote system, ensuring a clean sweep for the alliance.
Opposition Performance
The opposition Grand Alliance fielded Amarendra Dhari Singh as its sole candidate. However, he was defeated after four opposition legislators abstained from voting.
The absence of these members—three from Congress and one from the RJD—reduced the effective vote count and weakened the opposition’s chances, ultimately favouring the NDA candidates.
Voting Formula and Majority Requirement
Rajya Sabha elections follow the system of proportional representation using the single transferable vote. In this election, a candidate initially required 41 votes to win.
However, due to absentee legislators, the effective winning mark dropped to 40 votes . The NDA secured full participation of its legislators, while the opposition managed fewer valid votes, influencing the final outcome.
Political Significance of the Results
The election was held to fill vacancies arising from the retirement of members in April. It is significant as it brought prominent leaders like Nitish Kumar and Upendra Kushwaha into the Rajya Sabha .
The polls also marked a rare instance of voting in Bihar after nearly a decade, indicating shifting political dynamics and strong legislative backing for the NDA.
