Mission MITRA in Ladakh: Human Spaceflight Readiness explained by the ISRO

Mission MITRA: Space on Earth Simulation.

To investigate the behaviour of astronauts in extreme environments, the Indian Space Research Organisation has introduced Mission MITRA in Leh, Ladakh. The mission will simulate the conditions of space including low oxygen, extreme temperatures and isolation by conducting the mission at an altitude of approximately 3,500 metres between April 2 and April 9, 2026. It is an important pre-configurative measure to the human spaceflight programme, Gaganyaan, in India.


Ladakh: Natural Space Analogue.

Ladakh is a perfect location to do simulation because it is a harsh land. Hypoxia, low temperatures and isolation are very similar to those experienced during space missions. The factors influence not only physical health but also cognitive performance, which makes it possible to test human responses in a controlled but realistic environment without departing the planet.


Dwelling on Human Behaviour and Team Coordination.

The mission MITRA-Mapping of Interoperable Traits and Response Assessment- focuses more on human factors and not merely technology. It examines the stress functions of astronauts and support teams. These are decision-making, communication, emotional stability, and team work. These factors are critical to the success of the mission during long-duration space travel.


Collaborative Mission Framework

It is a joint mission of the ISRO and the Institute of Aerospace Medicine of the Indian Air Force. Protoplanet is a start-up based in Bengaluru that offers operational support. This partnership emphasizes the use of a multi-agency approach that integrates the knowledge of space research, aviation medicine, and private innovation.
