MegREAP Initiative Meghalaya’s Push for a 10 Billion Green Economy

  • The Government of Meghalaya has launched the Regenerative Economies through Accelerated & Inclusive Enterprises in Meghalaya (MegREAP) initiative to drive inclusive, climate-resilient growth and build a $10 billion green economy by 2028 . The initiative, notified in August 2025 under the Meghalaya Basin Development Authority (MBDA) , aims to integrate climate action, livelihoods, and markets through coordinated, community-led efforts.

Purpose and Vision

  • MegREAP serves as a collaborative platform connecting departments, missions, and partners to promote regenerative development. It focuses on strengthening community ownership, valuing natural and cultural capital, and fostering sustainable enterprises across sectors such as eco-tourism, clean energy, forest-based industries, and sustainable agriculture.

Building on Meghalaya’s Green Legacy

  • The initiative builds upon the State’s earlier environmental measures, including India’s first Payment for Ecosystem Services programme , forest management plans covering over one lakh hectares , and the Climate Change Council chaired by the Chief Minister.

Community Ownership and Natural Capital

  • With 78% forest cover , Meghalaya plans to turn its natural wealth into sustainable economic value. MegREAP promotes community-driven enterprises that align local development with global climate and biodiversity goals.

Bamboo Villages: A Key Component

  • In partnership with Common Ground — comprising Vrutti, Living Landscapes, and the Bamboo Village Trust — MBDA is developing Bamboo Villages to turn bamboo into a sustainable livelihood source while preserving ecological balance.
