Mumbai’s Mandale Metro Depot Becomes Asia’s Largest Facility
Mumbai marked a major leap in its metro infrastructure with the inauguration of the Mandale Metro Depot , now recognised as Asia’s largest metro depot . Designed for Metro Line 2B, the facility enhances operational capacity, boosts fleet readiness and strengthens connectivity between the city’s eastern and western suburbs.
Mega-Scale Infrastructure for Line 2B
Spread across 30.45 hectares , the double-decker depot can stable 72 eight-coach trains , with 36 trains accommodated on each level. The depot serves the DN Nagar–Mandale corridor of Metro Line 2B, a key link expected to decongest arterial roads and improve daily mobility for thousands of commuters.
Complex Track Architecture and Stabling Efficiency
The yard encompasses 29 km of internal tracks , engineered to manage large-scale operations smoothly. Three elevated viaducts enable efficient movement of rakes between the main line and the depot. The facility’s multi-level stabling design maximises land utilisation—crucial in Mumbai’s dense urban landscape.
Sophisticated Maintenance and Overhaul Facilities
The Mandale Depot is equipped to handle both routine inspections and advanced repairs. It features 10 maintenance lines, six inspection bays, and four bogie turntables . Heavy-duty storage units and precision tools allow uninterrupted technical operations, ensuring faster turnaround of metro trains.

Smart Systems, Sustainability and Line Progress
Automation plays a strong role in depot functioning. Dedicated wash plants enable daily and deep cleaning, while a pit wheel lathe handles wheel profiling. A G+3 Operations Control Centre monitors stabling, train movement and safety around the clock. Environment safeguards such as 175 KLD water recycling , dust suppression units, and underground utilities support sustainable operations.
Trial runs have already begun on the Mandale–Diamond Garden stretch. Full commissioning of Line 2B is anticipated between mid-2026 and late-2027 , marking another milestone in Mumbai’s expanding metro network.
