Maharashtra Signs MoU With Finnish Firms to Modernise Sassoon Dock

Sassoon Dock in Mumbai to Become Sustainable High-Tech Fishing Harbour

The Maharashtra Fisheries Development Corporation has signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) with three Finnish companies to modernise Sassoon Dock in Mumbai . The agreement aims to transform the dock into a technologically advanced and environmentally sustainable fishing harbour. The project will focus on upgrading infrastructure, introducing modern operational systems and strengthening waste management practices at one of India’s oldest fishing ports.

Partnership With Finnish Companies

The MoU was signed with Finland-based companies Helvar , Mirasis , and River Recycle during an event in Mumbai. The collaboration aims to introduce advanced technology and sustainable solutions to improve the efficiency of harbour operations. Key components of the partnership include improved plastic waste recycling systems, better management of discarded fishing nets and modernised net-repair facilities. The programme will also provide training and capacity-building initiatives for fishermen and dock workers to support the adoption of modern fishing harbour practices.

Importance of Sassoon Dock

Sassoon Dock remains one of India’s most important fishing harbours and a major centre for Maharashtra’s fisheries economy. According to Nitesh Rane , the harbour currently hosts about 1,560 registered mechanised fishing boats . The dock records an annual fish production of approximately 50,000 to 60,000 metric tonnes , supporting thousands of fishermen, traders and businesses linked to Mumbai’s seafood industry.

Infrastructure Upgrades

In recent years, the Government of Maharashtra has implemented several development projects at Sassoon Dock. These include the construction of net-mending sheds, repair workshops, underground water tanks, pump houses and protective boundary walls. Public facilities have also been renovated to improve working conditions for the fishing community.
