The Indian government appointed Lieutenant General (retd) NS Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) on 9 May 2026. He will take charge on 30 May 2026 , succeeding General Anil Chauhan. He is a highly decorated Army officer with nearly 39 years of service. He previously served as the Vice Chief of Army Staff and is currently Military Adviser in the National Security Advisory Board (NSAB).
Who Is the New Chief of Defence Staff?
The Government of India has chosen Lieutenant General (retd) NS Raja Subramani as the next Chief of Defence Staff (CDS) . This is a very high position in the Indian military. He will take over on 30 May 2026 . He replaces General Anil Chauhan , who was the CDS before him.
The government issued official orders on 9 May 2026 (Saturday). This appointment comes at an important time. The Defence Ministry is working on big military reforms. These include theatreisation (integrating the three services) and better coordination among the Army, Navy, and Air Force.

He was commissioned into the Garhwal Rifles in December 1985.

What Does the Chief of Defence Staff Do?
The CDS is the highest-ranking military officer in India. He is the principal military adviser to the government. The post was created in 2019 to bring better unity among the three armed forces.
