Kepang La Day Marks Valour of 1962 Defenders in Arunachal Pradesh

Kepang La Day, observed every year on 17 November , commemorates the bravery and sacrifice of Indian soldiers and local villagers who defended the strategic Kepang La Pass during the 1962 Sino-Indian War . This year’s events in Tuting, Upper Siang district , highlighted renewed community engagement and efforts to preserve the memory of the battle for younger generations.

Honouring the Heroes of Kepang La

The Kepang La Pass—located at an altitude of about 1,455 metres —was a vital frontier route linking Indian villages with cross-border trade networks before the 1962 conflict. As war unfolded, Indian defenders and local villagers mounted a determined resistance against advancing forces. Kepang La Day honours their courage and reinforces the historical significance of the pass in India’s border security narrative.

Youth Engagement Through Inter-School Event

Ahead of the main ceremony, the Indian Army’s Spear Corps conducted an inter-school meet in Tuting. Students took part in activities designed to deepen awareness of Kepang La’s wartime history. The initiative aimed to build pride among local youth and strengthen civil–military ties in this sensitive border region.

Community Participation and Regional Leadership

Tuting-Yingkiong MLA Alo Libang , attending as chief guest, emphasised the enduring importance of Kepang La Day in honouring the defenders of 1962. He encouraged collaborative efforts to develop Tuting as a model frontier settlement. Senior Army officers and district officials participated, reflecting the region’s cultural and strategic commitment to remembrance.
