KSRTC Honoured for Innovation in Inclusive Public Transport
The Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation has received the Governance Now 12th PSU National Awards in the “Excellence in Innovation” category for its accessibility project named Dhwani Spandana . The recognition was announced at an awards ceremony held in New Delhi . The initiative focuses on improving the usability of public transport services for visually impaired passengers by integrating assistive technologies within the bus network.
Assistive Technology for Visually Impaired Commuters
The Dhwani Spandana initiative introduces an onboard identification and navigation system designed to help visually impaired passengers recognise buses and travel independently. The system provides audio-based assistance that allows commuters to identify approaching buses and confirm routes more easily.
By offering clear auditory cues and navigation guidance, the initiative reduces uncertainty for visually impaired travellers and improves their ability to board the correct bus without relying heavily on external assistance.
Implementation in Mysuru Transport Network
The accessibility system has been installed in 200 city buses operating under the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation in the Mysuru urban transport network.
The project was implemented with technical collaboration from Deutsche Gesellschaft für Internationale Zusammenarbeit , commonly known as GIZ Germany . The partnership contributed expertise in accessibility design and inclusive mobility systems.
Improving Accessibility and Independence
Officials highlighted that the system allows visually impaired passengers to travel with greater confidence and safety. By enabling passengers to independently identify buses and navigate their journeys, the technology helps reduce dependence on others while using public transport.
Such initiatives also promote equal access to mobility services and support broader goals of inclusive urban transport systems.
Advancing Inclusive Urban Mobility
Recognition at the Governance Now 12th PSU National Awards underscores the role of innovation in improving public sector services. Accessible transport infrastructure is considered a key element of inclusive urban development, ensuring that people with disabilities can participate fully in social and economic life.
Projects like Dhwani Spandana demonstrate how technology can transform conventional transport systems into more accessible and user-friendly services.
