Ranchi, February 2: In a significant development for the state’s judiciary, Justice Mahesh Sharadchandra Sonak was sworn in as the Chief Justice of the Jharkhand High Court on Friday. The oath ceremony, held at the Birsa Munda Mandap in Lok Bhavan, was conducted by Jharkhand Governor Shri Santosh Gangwar, marking a formal transition in the court's leadership.

The event was graced by several eminent personalities, including Chief Minister Shri Hemant Soren, sitting judges of the High Court, judicial officers, advocates from the State Bar, and senior administrative officials. Justice Sonak succeeds former Chief Justice Tarlok Singh Chauhan, who retired upon superannuation earlier this month.

Appointment and Tenure

The Supreme Court Collegium, in its resolution dated December 18, had recommended Justice Sonak’s name for the position. Following the approval from the President of India, the appointment was finalized. With this elevation, Justice Sonak becomes the 17th Chief Justice to helm the Jharkhand High Court since it was constituted in November 2000, ensuring continuity in the state’s judicial administration.

Early Life and Career

Born on November 28, 1964, Justice Sonak completed his early education at Don Bosco High School in Panaji, Goa. He graduated with a science degree from Dhempe College of Arts and Science, and subsequently pursued law, earning an LL.B. with First Class honours from the M.S. College of Law in Panaji, which was then affiliated with the University of Bombay. Prior to his current role, he served as a Judge at the Bombay High Court, bringing with him a wealth of judicial experience.
