Italy Launches ‘Michelangelo Dome’—A Next-Generation Shield for Air, Space and Cyber Defence

Italy has taken a major leap in strategic security with the launch of the Michelangelo Dome , an advanced multi-domain defence system designed to detect and neutralise modern threats including missiles, drones, cyberattacks and space-based incursions. Developed by aerospace and military technology giant Leonardo , the system marks one of the most comprehensive security programmes undertaken in Europe in recent decades.

A Future-Ready Protection Network

Introduced in Rome in the presence of Defence Minister Guido Crosetto, the Michelangelo Dome aligns with NATO’s move towards network-centric warfare and integrated air-space defence. The project is aimed at reinforcing Italy’s national security while offering a scalable model for allied countries seeking collaborative defence solutions. Leonardo intends to expand the system through AI-driven command, autonomous monitoring tools and digital warfare modules.

Integration Across Air, Sea, Land and Space

Built on NATO-interoperability protocols, the system merges real-time intelligence from satellites, naval fleets, ground-based radars, missile interceptors and electronic warfare sensors. Unlike platform-based defence systems, the Dome operates through a central software-defined architecture, enabling joint operations even if partner nations use equipment from different manufacturers.

AI-Powered Threat Detection Mechanism

The network uses predictive artificial intelligence to rapidly classify threats and initiate counter-response measures. Early simulations show high efficiency against drone swarms, guided missiles and low-orbit surveillance assets. Partial capability is expected by 2028 , with complete operational readiness targeted for 2030 , positioning Italy as a leader in multi-layered European defence.
