India–New Zealand Celebrate 100 Years of Sporting Relations with New Initiatives
India and New Zealand have begun discussions to strengthen bilateral cooperation in sports as 2026 marks the centenary of sporting relations between the two nations . A high-level meeting was chaired in New Delhi by Mansukh Mandaviya, who held talks with a visiting New Zealand sports delegation. The discussions focused on expanding collaboration in sports development, athlete training and technological innovation. Officials also emphasised the role of sports diplomacy in enhancing the broader strategic partnership between the two countries.
Centenary of India–New Zealand Sporting Relations
The year 2026 commemorates 100 years of sporting ties between India and New Zealand. The relationship traces its origins to the Indian Army hockey tour to New Zealand in 1926 , which marked one of the earliest sporting exchanges between the two nations. This historic tour laid the foundation for sustained sporting engagement, including bilateral tours, competitions and athlete exchanges.
Building on this legacy, both countries are now exploring new initiatives to deepen cooperation among sports institutions, athletes and training programmes.
High-Level Delegations
The Indian side included officials from the Ministry of Youth Affairs and Sports, the Sports Authority of India and the Indian Olympic Association, along with representatives from various national sports federations.
The New Zealand delegation was led by Chris Bishop and included the country’s High Commissioner to India, Patrick John Rata. Former international cricketer Ross Taylor was also part of the delegation, along with representatives from Sport New Zealand and Paralympics New Zealand.
Priority Areas of Collaboration
During the meeting, both sides identified several disciplines for future cooperation, including rugby, rowing, canoeing, sailing, athletics and cycling . Plans were discussed for organising joint training camps, coaching exchanges, athlete development programmes and cultural events to strengthen engagement between the sporting communities of both countries.
India–New Zealand Centenary Sports Cooperation Programme
Officials also proposed launching the India–New Zealand Centenary Sports Cooperation Programme 2026 , a year-long initiative focusing on joint training, sports science collaboration and data-driven performance analysis .
The programme may also include an India–New Zealand Sports and Culture Week across multiple cities in both nations to celebrate shared sporting traditions and encourage people-to-people ties. A Joint Working Group will oversee the implementation of the cooperation framework and review the progress of collaborative activities.
