India Makes 1,000 km Quantum Communication Breakthrough in National Quantum Mission.

Overview

India has also made a significant breakthrough in quantum technology by being able to demonstrate a 1,000-kilometre quantum communication network. This milestone was accomplished as part of the National Quantum Mission, and India is one of only a few countries that are at the forefront of next-generation secure communication systems.


About the National Quantum Mission

The National Quantum Mission, which was initiated by the Department of Science and Technology, is allocated ₹6003 crore of financial outlay over the years 202324 203031. The mission will establish a robust quantum technology ecosystem through research, innovation and industry engagement. It belongs to the larger national drive to enhance scientific and technological potential.


Implementation Framework

The implementation of the mission is done in four Thematic Hubs (T-Hubs) in top institutions in India. These hubs are based on Hub-Spoke-Spike model, which allows collaboration between academia, industry, and research organisations. This combined system is aimed at speeding up both basic research and practice.


Core Focus Areas

The mission is concentrated on four areas. Quantum Computing is led by the Indian Institute of Science, Bengaluru. IIT Madras leads the way in Quantum Communication in collaboration with the Centre of Development of Telematics, New Delhi. Quantum Sensing and Metrology is organized by IIT Bombay and Quantum Materials and Devices is organized by IIT Delhi. These areas are collectively the pillars of the quantum ecosystem in India.
