India Issues NOTAM Near Pakistan Border Amid Rising Regional Tensions

IAF Air Exercise in Rajasthan Triggers Alert in Pakistan

Amid escalating geopolitical uncertainty in West Asia, India issued a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) restricting airspace near the India–Pakistan border in Rajasthan. The restriction, effective from March 5 to March 12, has been announced by the Indian Air Force to conduct a large-scale air exercise in the Bikaner–Jodhpur region. The move comes at a time of heightened global tensions linked to instability in Iran and broader regional security concerns.

Purpose of the NOTAM

A NOTAM (Notice to Airmen) is an official aviation advisory that alerts pilots and airlines about temporary airspace restrictions or hazards. Such notices are commonly issued during military drills, missile tests, or emergency situations to ensure aviation safety.

Under the current notification, fighter aircraft will conduct multiple sorties, simulated combat missions, air defence drills and high-speed manoeuvres. These exercises aim to strengthen operational readiness and test rapid-response capabilities in volatile strategic environments.

Pakistan’s Reaction

The announcement reportedly prompted immediate alert measures in Pakistan. Air defence units were activated and aerial surveillance along the border was intensified. Pakistan’s Defence Minister, Khawaja Asif, alleged that India and Israel were attempting to strategically “encircle” Pakistan.

Officials in Islamabad expressed concern that regional instability, combined with India’s relations with other neighbouring states, could create a hostile strategic environment for the country.

Additional Regional Pressures

Tensions have also been fuelled by recent cross-border exchanges between Pakistan and Afghanistan. The Taliban administration claimed to have targeted Pakistan’s Noor Khan Airbase, while reports suggest Pakistan carried out retaliatory strikes near Bagram Airbase. These developments have further intensified security anxieties in the region.

Important Facts for Exams

  • NOTAM stands for Notice to Airmen, an aviation safety advisory.

  • It temporarily restricts airspace during drills, tests or emergencies.

  • The exercise area lies near Bikaner and Jodhpur in Rajasthan.

  • Military air exercises test combat readiness and defence coordination.

While India has described the NOTAM as a routine military preparedness exercise, the prevailing geopolitical climate has heightened regional sensitivity. The episode illustrates how security drills can attract broader diplomatic and strategic interpretations during periods of international tension.
