India EV Battery Demand to Jump Tenfold-From 20 GWh to 200 GWh by 2032

OVERVIEW

India’s electric vehicle battery demand is set to grow very fast. It will rise from 20 GWh in 2025 to 200 GWh by 2032. That is a tenfold increase in just seven years. This estimate comes from a study by the Indian Energy Alliance and Customized Energy Solutions. The study will be released at the 12th India Energy Storage Week in New Delhi from 8 to 10 July. India’s EV sales crossed 2.5 million units in 2025. Two-wheelers lead the market. The study also covers battery chemistry, motor technology, and supply chain localisation.

EV BATTERY DEMAND PROJECTION

A new study has made a big prediction. India’s electric vehicle battery demand will jump from  20 GWh in 2025  to  200 GWh by 2032 . This is a  tenfold increase  in just seven years. GWh stands for  gigawatt-hour . It is a unit used to measure large-scale electrical energy storage and battery capacity. The study was done by the  Indian Energy Alliance  and  Customized Energy Solutions . It will be released at the  12th India Energy Storage Week  in New Delhi, which runs from  8 to 10 July .

INDIA’S EV MARKET STRUCTURE

India’s EV market is growing fast. In 2025, total EV sales crossed  2.5 million units . Here is the breakdown:

Vehicle Type Sales in 2025 (million units)
Electric two-wheelers 1.5
Electric three-wheelers 0.7
Others (cars, etc.) 0.3 (approx.)

Electric two-wheelers are the largest volume segment in India’s EV market. However, the next phase of demand growth is expected to come from  passenger electric cars  and  light commercial fleets .

BATTERY CHEMISTRY TECHNOLOGIES

Different EV segments use different battery chemistries.

  • NMC (nickel manganese cobalt)  currently holds a  70% market share  in the electric two-wheeler battery segment.

  • LFP (lithium iron phosphate)  is gaining market share in other EV segments.

The study also covers other battery technologies through 2032, including:

  • LMFP  (lithium manganese iron phosphate)

  • Solid-state batteries

  • Sodium-ion batteries

  • Other cell technologies

MOTOR TECHNOLOGIES IN EVs

The study also looks at motor technology. Two types of motors are common:
