ITDC Launches Tribal Homestay Training Programme 2026

Capacity Building for Tribal Tourism: ITDC & Tribal Affairs Initiative

The India Tourism Development Corporation (ITDC), under the Ministry of Tourism, in partnership with the Ministry of Tribal Affairs, has launched a Capacity Building Programme for Tribal Homestay Owners in New Delhi. This initiative aims to strengthen community-based tourism by enhancing the skills and professionalism of tribal homestay operators across the country.

Focus on Skill Development and Sustainable Tourism

The programme is designed to upgrade service quality, improve tourist experiences, and generate sustainable income opportunities for tribal communities. Training is being conducted by IHM Ashok, the hospitality training wing of ITDC. By imparting essential hospitality and management skills, the initiative seeks to integrate tribal regions into India’s expanding tourism sector.

Participation and Key Highlights

The first batch consists of 40 participants from Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, and Gujarat. Senior officials from both ministries attended the inauguration. A key feature of the programme was the release of the “Tribal Homestay – Operation & Development Manual 2026” , prepared by IHM Ashok. The manual offers practical guidance and has been translated into Hindi and Gujarati for wider reach.

Rising Demand for Experiential Tourism

With changing travel trends, tourists are increasingly opting for authentic, nature-based, and culturally immersive experiences. The homestay model helps address the lack of hotel infrastructure in remote areas while promoting longer stays and deeper cultural engagement. This model is particularly beneficial for tribal and hilly regions rich in heritage and biodiversity.

Inclusive Development and Future Expansion

The initiative reflects the government’s emphasis on inclusive growth through tourism. ITDC plans to train around 1,500 participants, who can further disseminate knowledge in their communities. This collaborative effort between ministries aims to preserve tribal culture while boosting economic opportunities through sustainable tourism.
