INST Mohali Develops Nanoparticle-Based Multi-Target Therapy for Alzheimer’s

New EGCG-Based Nanoplatform Shows Promise Against Alzheimer’s Disease

Researchers at the Institute of Nano Science and Technology (INST), Mohali , have reported a breakthrough nanoparticle-based therapeutic strategy that could significantly improve the treatment of Alzheimer’s disease . The Ministry of Science and Technology stated that the new approach tackles several pathological mechanisms of the disease at once, addressing a major limitation of existing therapies.

Why Current Alzheimer’s Treatments Fall Short
Most current treatments for Alzheimer’s disease focus on a single disease factor, such as amyloid beta plaque accumulation or oxidative stress . While these approaches may provide limited symptomatic relief, they rarely slow disease progression. The INST study proposes a multi-target disease-modifying strategy , aimed at improving memory, preserving cognitive function and altering the course of neurodegeneration rather than merely managing symptoms.

EDTNPs: A Multi-Functional Nanotherapy
The core of the new therapy is a specially designed nanoparticle called EDTNP (EGCG–dopamine–tryptophan nanoparticle). It combines:

  • Epigallocatechin-3-gallate (EGCG) , a powerful antioxidant from green tea,

  • Dopamine , a key neurotransmitter involved in learning and memory, and

  • Tryptophan , an essential amino acid supporting cellular balance.

Together, these components allow the nanoparticles to simultaneously target amyloid aggregation, oxidative stress, neuroinflammation and neuronal degeneration , the four major hallmarks of Alzheimer’s disease.

Enhancement with Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor
To further strengthen the therapeutic effect, researchers attached Brain-Derived Neurotrophic Factor (BDNF) to the nanoparticles, forming B-EDTNPs . BDNF plays a crucial role in neuronal survival, growth and repair. According to lead researcher Dr Jiban Jyoti Panda , this dual-action platform not only breaks down toxic amyloid beta clumps but also actively promotes neuronal regeneration, a rare achievement in Alzheimer’s research.
