Project 17A Stealth Frigate INS Taragiri Set for Induction
The Indian Navy is set to commission INS Taragiri (F41) on April 3, 2026. This induction marks a key milestone in enhancing India’s maritime capability and strengthening its strategic presence in the Indian Ocean region.
Overview of INS Taragiri
INS Taragiri is the fourth vessel of the Nilgiri-class stealth frigates under Project 17A, constructed by Mazagon Dock Shipbuilding Ltd. It is a modern successor to the earlier INS Taragiri of the Leander class. The ship has been designed by the Warship Design Bureau, reflecting India’s progress in indigenous naval design and construction.
Advanced Design and Operational Capabilities
The frigate incorporates advanced stealth features to reduce radar signature and improve survivability. It is capable of executing multi-role operations, including surface combat, air defence, and anti-submarine warfare. Compared to earlier Shivalik-class ships, it offers enhanced combat systems, automation, and operational efficiency.
Weapon Systems and Combat Suite
INS Taragiri is equipped with a sophisticated arsenal, including BrahMos missile for surface strikes and medium-range surface-to-air missiles (MRSAM) for air defence. It also features the MFSTAR radar system, a 76 mm Super Rapid Gun Mount, close-in weapon systems, and anti-submarine warfare equipment such as torpedoes and rockets, enabling comprehensive threat response.
Propulsion and Indigenous Development
The ship uses a Combined Diesel or Gas (CODOG) propulsion system, integrating diesel engines and gas turbines for optimal speed and efficiency. It also includes an Integrated Platform Management System (IPMS) for automated operations. INS Taragiri highlights India’s push towards self-reliance in defence manufacturing under indigenous shipbuilding initiatives.
