IMD Issues Orange, Yellow Alerts for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry Amid Heavy Rain

IMD Issues Orange and Yellow Alerts for Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has placed several districts of Tamil Nadu and Puducherry under orange and yellow alerts as a low-pressure system over the Bay of Bengal continues to trigger intense rainfall, thunderstorms and strong winds. The weather system has led to widespread showers across southern, delta and coastal regions, prompting precautionary measures from state authorities.

Heavy Rainfall Forecast and Alert Levels

According to the IMD, orange alerts have been issued for districts expected to receive very heavy rainfall between 11 cm and 20 cm , particularly on Monday, when the peak spell is forecast. Yellow alerts , indicating rainfall between 6 cm and 11 cm , have been placed over several adjoining regions. While rainfall intensity is expected to reduce gradually through the week, intermittent moderate showers and isolated thunderstorms may persist.

Districts Report Severe Impact

In the last 24 hours, districts including Kanyakumari, Tirunelveli, Thoothukudi, Tenkasi, Nagapattinam, Mayiladuthurai, Cuddalore, Thanjavur and Tiruvarur recorded significant rainfall. Waterlogging, flooded streets and transport disruptions have been widely reported. The State Disaster Response Force has been deployed in vulnerable pockets—especially in Tirunelveli and Thoothukudi—to assist in clearance operations and emergency response.

Public Safety Measures and School Closures

Schools and colleges have been shut in multiple districts due to persistent rainfall. Residents have been advised to avoid non-essential travel, stay alert to flood-prone zones and follow local warnings regarding strong winds and water accumulation. Chennai remains under a yellow alert, with cloudy conditions and scattered thunderstorms expected.
