K. Gopalankutty Receives Inaugural MGS Narayanan Award for Contributions to Historiography
Renowned historian K. Gopalankutty , former Head of the Department of History at Calicut University, has been selected as the first recipient of the newly instituted MGS Narayanan Award , established by the Kerala History Conference. The award commemorates the scholarly legacy of the late historian M.G.S. Narayanan , one of India’s most respected authorities on Kerala’s past, cultural patterns and medieval polity.
Honouring a Lifetime of Historical Research
Dr. Gopalankutty is being recognised for his extensive contributions to the study of historiography and modern Kerala history. His research encompasses major socio-political movements including the Indian national movement in Kerala, the rise and consolidation of Left ideology, the Malabar Rebellion of 1921, and peasant-worker-teacher struggles that reshaped social identities in the region. His academic career, writings and teaching have influenced a generation of history scholars and students across the state.
Award Presentation at Kerala History Conference
The award will be formally presented by Premalatha Narayanan , wife of the late historian, during the ninth international Kerala History Conference , scheduled at Government College, Koyilandy, on November 29, 2025 . Scholars from within and outside the country are expected to attend, making the occasion a significant moment for Kerala’s academic community. The award is intended to become an annual honour recognising outstanding historical scholarship.
