Rural Connectivity Milestone: HRTC Bus Reaches Remote Tumman Village in Mandi
Nearly eight decades after Independence, Tumman village in Himachal Pradesh has finally been connected to the public transport network. On December 31, 2025 , a government-run bus of the Himachal Road Transport Corporation rolled into the village for the first time, marking a historic milestone in rural connectivity and infrastructure development.
Historic First Bus Service in Tumman
For the first time since 1947, a public transport bus entered Tumman village, located in the Karsog subdivision of Mandi district. The arrival was celebrated enthusiastically by villagers with garlands, ribbon-cutting and distribution of sweets. For residents, the event symbolised long-awaited inclusion into the mainstream transport and governance framework.
End of Long-Standing Mobility Challenges
Until now, villagers were forced to walk long distances or rely on costly private transport to reach schools, hospitals, markets and government offices. The lack of public transport had disproportionately affected women, elderly residents and students. The introduction of an HRTC bus service is expected to significantly reduce travel time and expenses, while improving access to emergency healthcare and essential services.
Trial Run Completed, Regular Service Soon
HRTC officials confirmed that a successful trial run has been completed on the route. Tumman lies around 15 kilometres from the Ani bus stand , and regular bus services will begin after final administrative approvals. The initiative follows a similar step taken in April 2023, when Talaihan village in the same subdivision received its first bus service after nearly 70 years.
