Assam’s Ayesha Karim Earns National Recognition Through Artwork
A Class IV student from Guwahati has earned national acclaim by securing the prestigious Veergatha 5.0 Super 100 title. Ayesha Karim, studying at Sarala Birla Gyan Jyoti School in Amingaon, achieved the distinction for her compelling artwork depicting the heroism of Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan during the 2008 Mumbai terror attacks. Notably, she is the only participant from Assam in five years to receive this national-level recognition.
Artwork Celebrating Gallantry
Ayesha’s winning sketch honoured Major Sandeep Unnikrishnan, who was posthumously awarded the Ashoka Chakra for exceptional bravery during the 26/11 Mumbai attacks. Her artwork stood out for its expressive detail and emotional resonance, effectively portraying courage, sacrifice, and patriotism. Evaluators praised her visual interpretation of valour and her ability to communicate powerful national themes through art.
Veergatha Project and Its Objective
The Veergatha Project is a flagship initiative of the Ministry of Defence aimed at instilling awareness of gallantry awardees among school students. Conducted annually, the programme encourages creative engagement through essays, poems, paintings, and digital submissions. The initiative seeks to nurture civic responsibility, national pride, and respect for the armed forces.
The Super 100 category represents the competition’s highest tier, recognising the top entries nationwide following rigorous screening.
National Recognition and Exposure
As part of the honour, Ayesha received a cash prize, medal, and certificate from the Ministry of Defence. She was also invited to attend the 77th Republic Day Parade at Kartavya Path, providing her exposure to one of India’s most significant national events.
