Guntur Municipal Corporation is a winner of UNIDO GEM Award 2026.

Overview

The United Nations Industrial Development Organization in Vienna has awarded Guntur Municipal Corporation the 4th Gender Equality Mobilisation (GEM) Award. The award underscores a new model of women empowerment and sustainable urban waste management.

Women-Led Waste Management Program.

The award is in recognition of the programme that was implemented by GMC to put into service more than 200 women as electric auto drivers to collect waste on a door to door basis. These women who used to be in the informal waste industry were identified, trained and incorporated into formal jobs. The project will not only uplift livelihoods, but also dignity and financial independence.

UNIDO Sustainable Cities Project role.

The programme is run on the Sustainable Cities Integrated Approach Pilot (SCIAP), which is backed by UNIDO. It encourages zero-emission waste disposal with electric cars and develops green work. This strategy makes urban sanitation and climate-friendly practices and inclusive economic growth go hand in hand.

Vienna International Recognition.

Olga Rataj, Project Manager with the Sustainable Cities Programme, was a winner of the award at a ceremony attended by world leaders including Tarja Halonen. The acknowledgement positions the model of GMC to a world platform as an ideal practice in gender-sensitive urban governance.

Additional Administrative Achievement

Besides the international award, GMC also received the state recognition of effective property tax collection of the FY 202526. This indicates a high institutional capability and good municipal administration and its social programs.
