Gujarat Intensifies Foot and Mouth Disease Control Campaign for Livestock
The Government of Gujarat has initiated a large-scale vaccination campaign to curb the spread of Foot and Mouth Disease across the state. The drive commenced on 1 March 2026 and will continue until 15 April , under the National Animal Disease Control Programme . The campaign aims to protect livestock health, enhance productivity and reduce economic losses faced by farmers.
What is Foot and Mouth Disease?
Foot and Mouth Disease is a highly infectious viral disease affecting cloven-hoofed animals such as cattle, buffaloes, sheep and goats. Infected animals typically show symptoms like fever, blisters in the mouth and on feet, and excessive salivation.
The disease leads to a sharp drop in milk yield and overall productivity, making it a major concern for dairy-based rural economies. Rapid transmission among animals can result in widespread outbreaks if not controlled through timely vaccination.
Vaccination Drive Under NADCP
The campaign is being implemented under the National Animal Disease Control Programme , which focuses on controlling and eventually eliminating major livestock diseases across India.
Veterinary teams are conducting door-to-door vaccination of cattle and buffaloes across districts in Gujarat . Experts stress that biannual vaccination is critical to maintain herd immunity and prevent future outbreaks.
Digital Monitoring Through INAPH
To ensure effective implementation, livestock are being identified using ear-tagging, and their details are uploaded on the INAPH portal (Information Network for Animal Productivity and Health).
This platform enables real-time monitoring of vaccination coverage, disease trends and livestock health, allowing authorities to track progress and improve response strategies.
Role of Farmers and Local Institutions
The campaign has received active participation from farmers, dairy cooperatives and local institutions. Awareness drives are being conducted to educate livestock owners about disease prevention and the importance of vaccination.
In many villages, a large proportion of livestock has already been vaccinated, reflecting strong community involvement. Authorities expect that sustained efforts will significantly reduce the incidence of Foot and Mouth Disease and strengthen rural livelihoods.
