Historic Bascule Bridge at Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port to Be Modernised
The Union Government has approved the renovation of the Bascule Bridge located at the Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port in Kolkata . The project, cleared by Sarbananda Sonowal, is estimated to cost ₹117.54 crore . The renovation aims to upgrade the ageing bridge infrastructure and improve cargo handling as well as vehicular movement within the Kolkata Dock System , an important maritime logistics hub on India’s eastern coast.
Approval of the Renovation Plan
The renovation proposal was submitted by Syama Prasad Mookerjee Port and subsequently examined by the Delegated Investment Board (DIB) . The board, chaired by the Secretary of the Ministry of Ports, Shipping and Waterways , reviewed the proposal during its meeting on February 16, 2026 . Following evaluation, the project was approved for implementation to modernise the bridge and improve operational efficiency at the port.
Funding Through the Sagarmala Programme
The renovation will receive financial assistance of approximately ₹41 crore under the Sagarmala Programme . Sagarmala focuses on strengthening India’s maritime infrastructure by improving port connectivity, modernising port facilities and enhancing logistics efficiency. The funding support is expected to accelerate the upgrade of the bridge and boost cargo movement within the port complex.
Modernisation of the Historic Bridge
Constructed nearly six decades ago by Waagner-Biro Bridge Systems AG , the Bascule Bridge is a double-leaf movable bridge designed to lift its deck and allow ships to pass through the dock channel. The modernisation project will include structural strengthening, mechanical refurbishment and electro-mechanical system upgrades .
These improvements are expected to enhance the bridge’s reliability, ensure safer operations and enable smoother movement of cargo vehicles and port traffic.
Implementation of the Project
The renovation work will be executed by Rail Vikas Nigam Limited (RVNL), which specialises in large-scale infrastructure development. The construction contract has been awarded to H & H Fressinet .
Once completed, the upgraded bridge will improve connectivity within the Kolkata Dock System , supporting faster cargo handling and contributing to the broader goal of modernising India’s maritime logistics network.
